Ralph A. Mortensen, Ph.D., ABPP
Chief Psychologist, HR/OD

Ralph A. Mortensen is board-certified in Organizational and Business Consulting Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. His doctorate degree is in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He belongs to the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and the Society of Consulting Psychology divisions of the American Psychological Association.

Ralph began his career within the human resources units of a bank and a public utility. After more than 20 years with his own consulting firm, Aon Consulting, YSC Ltd., and RHR International, Ralph joined IPAT in early 2009. He is an experienced trainer and speaker to local, regional and international audiences and also has experience as a university professor and an academic administrator.

Ralph's expertise is in the areas of consulting with decision makers facing strategic talent, organizational, and leadership issues. He has specialized in talent assessment and executive coaching for much of his career.

Ralph has created and managed employee selection systems for entry-level, professional, and managerial roles. This has involved analyzing jobs and job families, identifying competencies, choosing appropriate measurements, and investigating their predictive validity. In addition, he has completed thousands of individual assessments of executive, middle manager, and professional job candidates, including screening for CEO and other C-suite roles.

Ralph has also designed and delivered workshops on employment interviewing and employee performance coaching among other subjects. He led a talent management best practices study in 2001 and has provided regular support for several clients' annual talent review processes.


Stephen P. Griffin, Psy.D.
Chief Psychologist, Public Safety & Security Services

Stephen Griffin is a licensed clinical psychologist and trained police psychologist. His doctorate degree is in clinical psychology, with a focus in forensics, from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. He belongs to the Society for Clinical Psychology and Public Service divisions of the American Psychological Association. In addition, Dr. Griffin is the president-elect of the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police-Police Psychological Services Section (IACP-PPSS) where he served on the 2009 Pre-employment Guideline Committee and currently serves as the Chair of the Awards and Recognition Committee. Within the Association of Test Publishers, Dr. Griffin will act as Chair of the Clinical Division and represent clinical psychological testing in 2011.

Dr. Griffin began his work in juvenile forensic psychology applying psychological testing to teens facing criminal charges in the court system. Over time, he began conducting assessments for various police and fire departments in the Midwest. While working in a private practice setting within the Chicagoland area, Dr. Griffin was also a professor, teaching undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students. Courses focused on psychological testing, cognition and learning, clinical interviewing skills, police psychology, and psychopathology.

Areas of expertise include pre-employment psychological screening, defining leadership competencies in public safety, specialty assessments for high-risk occupations, and selection of law enforcement in nation-building countries.

Dr. Griffin joined IPAT, Inc. in 2008 as Chief Psychologist, Public Safety & Security Services. In this position he oversees research and consulting within the PS&S sector which consists of police, fire, corrections, private security, and military applications.

Dr. Griffin has published and presented professionally on topics related to early warning systems, pre-employment screening processes and measures, domestic violence, among other areas.  


Michael R. Stowers, M.A.
Consultant and Research Specialist

Michael Stowers is a Researcher and Consultant with IPAT, Inc. His responsibilities include
research, consulting, and product validation and testing within IPAT’s assessment portfolio.
Michael also contributes to the development and maintenance of IPAT’s Public Safety and Security assessment batteries.

Before joining IPAT, Michael worked as an Associate Consultant for The Center for Sustainable
Solutions, where he developed surveys, implemented new technology solutions, and provided applied research support to fellow consultants. Michael has also worked on linking employee attitudes with customer satisfaction results for a large logistics software company.

Michael serves as an adjunct faculty member at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where he teaches graduate seminars in Statistics, Foundations of Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and Data Management. He has also served as adjunct faculty at The Adler School of Professional Psychology where he taught Issues of Assessment in Police Psychology to officers from the Chicago Police Department enrolled in a Police Psychology MA program. Michael holds a B.A. in Chemistry from Knox College, an M.A. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and is completing his Psy.D. at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.


Scott Bedwell, M.S.
Senior Research and Development Consultant

Scott Bedwell is a Senior Research and Development Consultant for IPAT. His responsibilities include research, consulting, and validation of IPAT’s assessment portfolio for employee selection and development. In addition, he also coordinates with external researchers to support the use of IPAT’s assessments and serves on the research assistance review committee. Scott also serves as an internal consultant to other IPAT team members around IPAT’s product information, research design, and psychometric and statistical issues.

Scott has been with IPAT 11 years. During his tenure at IPAT Scott has been a member of project teams developing new assessments -- including the PsychEval Personality Questionnaire and the
Emotional Judgment Inventory -- and coordinating the translation of the 16PF® Questionnaire into several languages. In addition, Scott has worked with client organizations to conduct validation research in sales, health care, customer service, leadership, and public safety positions.

Scott holds a BS in Psychology and MS in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Illinois State University. He is currently completing his doctoral degree in the Industrial and Organizational Psychology program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and anticipates graduating in the Spring of 2010.
