IPAT staff to present at 2009 SIOP Conference
January, 2009
Failure is an experience that most adults encounter in some form during their career. By studying failure, we can understand how to detect it early, how to prevent it, and how to coach those experiencing failure so as to maximize learning and minimize the harmful effects associated with failure.
Noelle Newhouse, Ph.D. and Scott Bedwell, M.S., will be co-presenters in a symposium at the 24th annual conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).
The symposium, Down But Not Out: Measuring, Understanding, and Coaching Failure, will address four areas of failure related to employees in organizations: different ways of measuring the concept of failure, precursors to failure, personal perception of failure, and lessons learned in conjunction with failure. In addition, the concept of career setbacks and failure will be examined across four different cultures.
The symposium will examine failure in the workplace and the derailment of leaders in three different manners, covered in the following papers:
- Personality Antecedents of Different Operationalizations of Derailment/Failure (Noelle Newhouse, Ph.D., IPAT, Inc.; Scott Bedwell, M.S., IPAT, Inc.), will examine personality and situational variables simultaneously in the detection of derailment. Questions concerning whether there is a personality profile that is more likely to experience failure will be explored, as well as examining organizational variables that may indicate impending failure.
- The Experience and Psychological Construct of Workplace Failure (Nancy A. Newton, Ph.D., The Chicago School of Professional Psychology; Michael Stasik, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology; Jennifer Thompson, Ph.D. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology) will present a model of the subcomponents of the failure experience and empirically test the model.
- Learning from failure: A cross-cultural examination of leadership development (Ellen Van Velsor, Ph.D., Center for Creative Leadership; Meena S. Wilson, Ph.D., Center for Creative Leadership) will examine the experience of failure across four different cultures. Personal and organizational failure will be examined through career mistakes and setbacks.
The 2009 SIOP Conference will be held April 2-4, 2009 in New Orleans. The complete Newhouse and Bedwell paper will be posted to the IPAT website upon conclusion of the SIOP Conference.
